You are in the process of launching your e-commerce website and you are wondering which solution you should use:
Prestashop, Magento, Shopify, WordPress with woo-commerce…Today I’m going to talk to you about Shopify that I’ve already tested myself, I’m going to give you my opinion on this solution. Before giving you my opinion on this solution I will tell you about the history of Shopify.
Shopify exists since 2004 in Canada, more than 500 000 people are using the solution
with a big part of English-speaking websites, but the solution is starting to be successful in non-English speaking countries. You can imagine that the solution is seriously considering the number of people who use the solution, but what is really worth this solution compared to the heavyweights that are woo-commerce, Prestashop, and Magento. I’ll give you my opinion on Shopify from installation to site launch.
Use Shopify to make a “small” e-commerce site
When I speak of small I speak of the number of references, Shopify is according to me a solution adapted to the small site (less than 1000 references), I do not recommend using the solution beyond because I do not find the management of categories and products is very optimized.
Installation of Shopify
Shopify is a turnkey e-commerce solution, so you don’t have to worry about hosting and that kind of thing, the only thing you have to do is to take a domain name and do 2/3 manipulations to synchronize your domain name on Shopify, you can also buy it directly on Shopify. The installation is done very easily the time to create your account and then start to configure your site all in 1 minute. Compared to CMS like Prestashop, a novice can easily install Shopify. I have created an article that helps you to configure your Shopify store, I invite you to read it if you want to launch one.
Hosting and domain name with shopify
Unlike other solutions, you don’t have to manage this part, as soon as you subscribe to the bandwidth subscription you have unlimited bandwidth, that is to say, that your site can receive unlimited traffic. The management of hosting can quickly be something very delicate.
If you want to make changes when you do not know too much
A mistake is quickly made if you want to make changes when you do not know too much, there you do not have this problem. For the hosting you have 2 choices: take it from a host of your choice and then make the transfer or take it directly on Shopify, I tested the 1st solution, and it is not very complicated to make the transfer, Shopify even provides you with a tutorial to make the manipulation.
Shopify offers 5-6 free themes, but these themes are quite simplistic and who says free says used by many e-merchants and especially beginners, I find that free themes do not look professional enough, still, Shopify offers more choices of free themes than Prestashop for example. Shopify has the smallest catalog of paid themes, a little more than a hundred compared to its competitors, but that will be enough to make you happy.
If you know how to touch the code you can modify your theme
And if you know how to touch the code you can modify your theme as you like because you have access to a code editor, and a little more you can edit it online unlike Prestashop where you have to go through the server and make the modification of the server. Shopify has been thought for novices in HTML/CSS, you can easily change the color of your theme, add a logo, change the color of a button all this has been simplified as much as possible.
The app store of Shopify
On Shopify, unlike Prestashop, we talk about applications rather than modules, the big advantage is that in 2 seconds you install an application on your site, you have free apps and other paid, the application developers are paid by subscriptions inexpensive. Very often the applications are free for a few days to test the application. With Prestashop for example you have to buy the module first, before knowing if it really suits you or not.
Moreover, by installing the applications you never have any problem with the integration in 1 click
the integration is installed and configured whereas with other solutions you sometimes have modules that do not install correctly and a webmaster intervention is often necessary to identify the problem. You have applications for everything: sales, flow management, social networks, logistics…
Shopify at SEO level
On each page you can add a title tag, meta description and modify the URL of your site, apart from that I find the basic SEO part not very advanced. You can not for example put in page in no index and no-follow. I find that there is very little to do for the native SEO on the solution, an application could do the trick if you want to push your SEO further. The small surprise however concerning the speed of the site we talk about it just below with an example.
Shopify Site Speeds
The site of the American manufacturer of electric luxury cars runs on Shopify, yes yes I assure you what according to the need not need to have a solution “full dev” developed by a developer when we test the speed of the site with the Google tool to analyze the speed, we see that the site has a score of 76/100 is a very honorable score.
The blog part of shopify
Let’s face it, Shopify’s blog solution is only a backup solution, but the number one in this field is still WordPress, the blog part can be used to do something simple and quick but if you want something professional you have to go through WordPress.
Support and shopify community
This is the big advantage of the solution as soon as you register no matter if you take the basic subscription or the most expensive one you have access to an email and phone support, in addition to this phone support the community is large I remind you more than 500 000 sites in the world.
You have Facebook groups dedicated to Shopify with more than 5000 people
as soon as you get stuck on something you can quickly find answers to your questions. Prestashop, WordPress, and Magento don’t have support, that’s really the biggest one.
The cool tools that Shopify offers
Shopify offers a whole bunch of tools for entrepreneurs, here is the list of tools:
- logo creation
- business name generator
- payslip generator
- business card generator
- invoice template
- barcode generator
- image resizing tool
We can see that Shopify has thought about small entrepreneurs by providing them with free tools that can help them in their business creation and management.
The mobile with shopify
Shopify has well understood the importance of mobile especially for SEO and above all for internet users. All Shopify themes are mobile, even the free ones. Shopify even has a mobile application where you can view your orders, configure your store, add products … We feel that Shopify has taken the turn of the mobile for a while.
Advantages of the Shopify solution
So I will list for you the advantages of using the Shopify solution:
- The solution is easy to use, even for a novice, and you don’t need to be a professional developer
- You don’t have to worry about hosting
- Can also be used by more experienced people because you can make modifications directly on the HTML/CSS code

How much does the Shopify solution cost
Of course, Shopify is not free, no quality solution is. You have a 14 days trial version where you can test the solution without paying. Here is a table summarizing the cost of the solution: From the $29 version, you have access to almost all the important features at launch. This version is more than enough, however, you have transaction fees on each order that are more important 2% against 0.5% for the advanced Shopify version.
There is also a Shopify lite package that allows you to sell on all the platforms you want:
Facebook, a WordPress site… You also have the Shopify plus package which is for very large sites, the applications are already integrated into the solution, the cost of this package is on demand.
